Today I want to speak to you about “Participatory Budgeting — A Mechanism For Finding Activities To Fund.” Community budgeting originated in Brazil 35 years ago in response to corruption. It promised accountancy and transparency. It spread to the US starting in 2009 in Chicago. There is no one one single way it works, but typically residents propose ideas to fund and the city council or sometimes a community vote decide what projects deserve funding.
